Donor Appreciation in Action: Big Sky Bravery Leverages Golf as a Fundraiser

Turning Golf Tournaments into High-Impact Fundraising Opportunities for Nonprofits

When nonprofit leaders ask for new ways to engage major donors and raise meaningful funds, one answer keeps rising to the top: experiential fundraising. Big Sky Bravery partnered with Dormie Network Foundation to do exactly that—turning private golf memberships and curated trips into powerful auction items that fund programs for active-duty Special Operations Forces. The result? Real dollars, real stories, and a model that other nonprofits can replicate.

About Big Sky Bravery: Supporting Those on the Front Line

Founded in 2015, Big Sky Bravery (BSB) delivers post-combat decompression for active-duty Special Operations Forces in Montana’s rugged backcountry. BSB’s programs are designed exclusively for active-duty Special Operations Forces—elite warriors who are still serving on the front lines. Recipients are not self-selected, nor does BSB take part in the selection process. Instead, they are chosen by their chain of command based on need, ensuring BSB is reaching those who will benefit most from the experience. Allyson Keller, BSB’s Director of Marketing, shares: "Our commitment doesn’t end when a program does. We provide long-term follow-through, staying connected and offering ongoing support to ensure the restoration they find in Montana continues well beyond their time with us.”

Building Military Nonprofit Partnerships with Dormie Network Foundation

The partnership between Big Sky Bravery and Dormie Network Foundation (DNF) began with a simple introduction. Stephanie Uter, BSB’s Director of Events, was introduced to Howie Hutchinson, Director of Philanthropy at DNF, through a former colleague. After a great initial conversation, she connected Howie with Josh McCain, Founder & CEO of BSB, who later visited and played at Dormie Club, a Dormie Network course. Around the same time, Stephanie toured the course, further sparking ideas about potential collaboration. “Inspired by Dormie Club’s incredible setting and mission alignment, BSB’s Development Team began brainstorming ways to bring a fundraiser to life—and from those early conversations, the Operator Cup was born,” says Stephanie.

Military and first responders are one of DNF’s four giving pillars. BSB and DNF designed a fundraising moment built around access and hospitality. By leveraging in-kind donations like private golf memberships, BSB tapped into one of the most effective high-value auction items for nonprofits. That strategic move changed the dynamic of the room: donors competed for experiences, not just items—and the bids reflected that appetite.

Big Sky Bravery’s Golf Event Raises $700K

Nonprofits are increasingly turning to unique fundraising ideas and Big Sky Bravery shows how it’s done.

The Inaugural Operator Cup proved the model in dramatic fashion. The charity golf tournament raised just over $700,000 through a combination of team sales, “Sponsor an Operator” contributions, and live auction. In-kind Dormie Network memberships, offered as part of the “Sponsor an Operator” initiative, accounted for 41% of the total funds raised.

Funds raised are directed to upcoming programs for active-duty Special Operations Forces. The event at Dormie Club has significantly moved the needle to keep BSB on pace for 26% program growth this year, to better support the underserved active-duty SOF community.

Stephanie shares that when planning the call for cash at the Dormie Club event, BSB wanted to create something memorable and meaningful—something that went beyond a traditional paddle raise. “Howie generously offered as many Dormie Network memberships as we needed to support our success," says Stephanie. “With that, we launched a ‘Sponsor an Operator’ initiative: a $13,500 donation that not only fully funded a recipient’s experience but also included a one-year Dormie Network membership for the donor."

To make the moment even more impactful, one of BSB’s team members came up with the idea to pair operator tickets with American flags. Donors were invited to walk their flags to the front of the room and place them in ammo cans, symbolically showing the Operators present just how deeply they are valued and supported. Through this powerful display, BSB raised enough to fully fund around 20 Operators.

Dormie Network Experiences Elevate Fundraising Through Golf

The reaction from donors when they see Dormie Network experiences available is consistently exciting. For nonprofits looking to engage major donors, partnerships like this one are a game-changer.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive. After spending three nights at Dormie Club and experiencing the full Dormie Network hospitality firsthand, donors were genuinely thrilled at the opportunity to receive a membership. It felt like the perfect blend—supporting our nation’s most elite warriors while also gaining access to an exclusive golf trip. It’s been a win-win that left donors feeling both inspired and appreciated,” shares Stephanie.

At the event, the Dormie Club merchandise team helped coordinate custom cottage gifting to make the experience memorable for donors.

This model doesn’t just generate one-time gifts—it builds long-term relationships, deepening engagement with major supporters.

Creating Memories That Inspire Ongoing Support

BSB’s CEO and Founder, Josh McCain, observed the effect of experiential fundraising firsthand. Josh McCain visited GrayBull Club with donors in August and describes the visit as unforgettable from start to finish.

“Every detail exceeded expectations, showcasing just how special this opportunity was.”

Josh said the hospitality was second to none. “From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to ensure every need was met. Their professionalism and warmth made the experience feel both exclusive and welcoming. The food was exceptional, with every meal thoughtfully prepared and on par with the finest private clubs. The lodging was equally impressive—comfortable, refined, and perfectly suited for a golf retreat.”

Josh says GrayBull isn’t just a place to play golf; it’s a complete experience built around excellence, generosity, and care. “For those who supported this through the auction, it was not just a trip—it was a memory that will last a lifetime.”

Organizations looking for unique donor experiences should note that exceptional hospitality fosters lasting donor engagement. When donors return home recounting sunsets on the 18th, chef-driven meals, and cottage conversations, they’re primed to reengage—and to tell their friends.

Big Sky Bravery and Dormie Network Foundation: Partnering to Deepen Donor Impact

Big Sky Bravery and Dormie Network Foundation are already planning future touchpoints—previewed events include a September Tribute Dinner, “Fight Night” in 2026, and the return of the Operator Cup in 2026. These occasions are opportunities for donors to engage, experience, and deepen commitment.

Whether it’s making a one-time donation, sponsoring a program recipient, attending one of Big Sky Bravery’s fundraising events, or simply sharing their mission with others—every effort makes a difference. Supporters can sign up for BSB’s newsletter, follow on social media, and reach out directly to explore opportunities for partnership, volunteering, or hosting a fundraiser in their community. “However you choose to get involved, you’re helping us give back to the brave men and women who give everything for our country—and we’re deeply grateful,” shares Allyson.

Big Sky Bravery’s partnership with Dormie Network Foundation offers a blueprint for nonprofit organizations seeking luxury auction items to deepen donor engagement.

Nonprofits looking to level up their fundraising should consider partnering with Dormie Network Foundation. If you have or know a nonprofit looking for fundraising support, request consideration for support from DNF.
